We're looking for a Fleet Director to lead a fule transportation fleet serving 300+ delivery locations across Michigan.This is a hands-on leadership role offering you the chance to build consistency, training, and culture across 8+ fleet locations.

Responsibilities

 

JOB PURPOSE:

The Fleet Director is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and development of the company’s fuel transportation fleet serving 300+ delivery locations across Michigan. This role oversees driver recruitment, training, performance management, and operational efficiency across 8+ fleet locations. The Fleet Director works closely with Dispatch, Safety, and Operations to ensure safe, compliant, reliable, and cost-effective fuel delivery.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on trucking experience, a strong understanding of driver training and development, and a logistics mindset focused on efficiency, consistency, and accountability.

 

Driver Leadership & Management

  • Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, and retain a team of 50+ professional fuel transport drivers.
  • Provide direct leadership, coaching, and performance management across all fleet locations.
  • Establish clear expectations, performance standards, and accountability for drivers.
  • Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and customer service.
  • Address disciplinary issues, corrective actions, and driver relations as needed.

Training & Development

  • Develop and oversee driver training programs, including onboarding, refresher training, and skills development.
  • Ensure drivers are properly trained on fuel delivery procedures, equipment operation, and company policies.
  • Partner with the Safety Coordinator to deliver compliance, defensive driving, and regulatory training.
  • Identify high-potential drivers and support career development and advancement opportunities.

Fleet Operations & Logistics

  • Work closely with the Dispatch team to optimize routing, scheduling, and utilization of drivers and equipment.
  • Support efficiency initiatives to reduce downtime, improve on-time delivery, and control transportation costs.
  • Collaborate with Operations to ensure staffing aligns with seasonal demand and business growth.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as productivity, hours of service, turnover, and service levels.

Safety & Compliance

  • Partner with the Safety Coordinator to ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and state regulations.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure consistent enforcement of safety policies.
  • Participate in accident reviews, incident investigations, and corrective action planning.
  • Ensure driver qualification files, training records, and compliance documentation are maintained.

Equipment & Asset Coordination

  • Coordinate with maintenance teams regarding equipment availability, driver inspections, and reporting issues.
  • Ensure drivers are properly trained on assigned equipment and technologies.
  • Support initiatives related to equipment utilization, cleanliness, and care.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in trucking, transportation, or fleet operations.
  • Prior experience as a driver strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting, training, and managing commercial drivers.
  • Strong understanding of DOT and fuel transportation safety requirements.
  • Background in logistics, dispatch coordination, and operational efficiency.
  • Experience managing teams across multiple locations is highly preferred.

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Combination of office-based work, terminal visits, and ride-alongs.
  • Regular travel to fleet locations throughout Michigan.
  • Availability to respond to operational or driver issues outside normal business hours as needed
