THIS WILL BE FOR THE CHEBOYGAN/GAYLORD AREA
An incumbent of this position is responsible for the operation of a tractor-trailer rig requiring high level driving skills and use of independent judgment. The driver loads, transports, and delivers products such as various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, and kerosene to assigned/designated establishments that resell these products to the general public. Products are loaded at terminals onto a compartmentalized tanker from which they are distributed. Delivery routes are regional and intrastate but require traveling long distances from a designated reporting location to loading terminals, then to delivery locations followed by return trip(s) to a loading terminal with the possibility of making additional deliveries prior to return to the reporting location; this represents a scheduled daily routine directed via centralized dispatching from Bear Lake headquarters. At present, those Transport Drivers assigned to the Bear Lake and Scottville locations report directly to the Director-Company Fleet and Transport Group; all other Transport Drivers report directly to the Branch Manager at the Branch office to which they are assigned. Driver contacts are made to and from the assigned Director or Branch Manager regarding issues or necessary directives. Transport Drivers, other than those assigned to Bear Lake or Scottville, report directly to the assigned Branch Manager with dotted line responsibility to the Director-Company Fleet and Transport Group located at Bear Lake Headquarters. Transport Drivers are subject to Hours of Service and logging requirements pursuant to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and are responsible for maintaining a daily record of hours, miles driven, and locations; An incumbent is subject to regulations governing the operation and maintenance of Underground Storage Tanks and is identified as having Class C responsibility for compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) regulations.
They clean, service, and maintain tractor and trailer components; the driver performs minor maintenance and makes minor equipment adjustments as necessary. Performs daily pre- and post-trip inspections of tractor and trailer and maintains required DOT reports. A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements is required. Must have ability to read, write, and follow directions. Operates under specific detailed instructions referring changes in schedules or problems to supervision but must have the capability to make independent judgments. Has the ability to verbally communicate and understand details and directions and adhere to all Safety/DOT Regulations. #CA

Driver training certification from technical school or specialty driving program, or three to six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak to and listen effectively with customer and employee contacts made necessary in the performance of daily work activities.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certifications and Licenses:
Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake, tanker, and hazardous materials endorsements. Class C Training in compliance with EPA and MDEQ regulations.
Must be 21 years old, as required by DOT regulations in order to legally haul hazardous materials.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee drives a tandem tractor-trailer rig long distances to terminals to load product and to make trips to unloading points to dispense product. All travel is intra-state. The employee is regularly expected to work near moving parts, fumes, or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Physical demands of this job require prolonged periods of driving and maneuvering a combination tractor-trailer rig and exertion of lifting, pulling, connecting hoses to load and dispense product. Physical effort is exerted on a routine, frequent basis. Activities at commercial delivery sites may involve maneuvering rig, working around obstructions, and pulling hoses long distances. Adverse weather conditions may involve extreme heat, rain, and deep snow. A driver must have the agility and strength to climb ladders to load and unload product and for frequent ingress/egress to and from the truck cab; a driver must occasionally climb onto the top of the truck’s tank compartment to clear fuel lines and for access to tank components for loading/unloading product compartments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to spend long hours driving, maneuvering a combination tractor-trailer rig, also to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to seventy five (75) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned.
Maintain a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with required endorsements to operate a commercial motor vehicle having a gross combination rating of 26,001 pounds or more. Required endorsements include air brake, tanker, and hazardous materials.
Maintenance of a valid CDL depends upon meeting physical qualifications and medical certification as covered by parts 391.41 and 391.43 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). Must submit to: 1) Annual physical examination 2) Random drug and alcohol testing, and 3) Annual record of violations.
Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections and maintenance of tractor and trailer.
May make daily contacts with dealers and Convenience Store locations to determine Petroleum product inventory levels.
Travel to terminal location to load products; one or more daily trips to terminal may be required depending on geography involved and delivery needs.
Report hazmat related spills, equipment problems, etc. to supervisor immediately upon occurrence and the Hazmat Emergency Response Number as required. Follows guidelines provided in the Emergency Response Guidebook in the event of a hazardous materials incident.
Report hazardous conditions or maintenance problems encountered loading or at delivery sites to supervisor.
Routine Responsibilities include:
a) Driving truck into position to load at filling rack.
b) Adhere to all safety rules and regulations required by the terminal involved.
c) Attaching ground wire to truck during loading operation.
d) Opening valves or starting pumps to fill tank.
e) Place identification tag at fill valve to identify product in compartment.
f) Reading gauges or meters and recording quantity loaded.
g) Driving tractor trailer to points of delivery.
h) Stick customers tank prior to unloading to prevent overfill.
i) Pulling hose to tank, connecting hose, and opening valves to dispense product.
j) Recording amount delivered and issues delivery ticket to customer.
As a function of their respective job responsibilities, all Driver personnel have frequent contacts with the existing customer base and/or potential residential, commercial, and industrial clients. Recognizing that the viability and very existence of BCOC relies on maintaining and increasing the customer base, Drivers play a key role in identifying and encouraging new sales opportunities either directly or by reporting them. It is expected that they generate sales leads for existing customers and/or identify and report potential clients to their immediate supervisor or manager for follow-up action.
